Why IDD

“Our journey to founding Cana Ranch wasn't sparked by a personal connection to someone with intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD). Instead, it began with a simple yet profound calling: to use the art of winemaking as a vessel for positive change. Our desire to understand the intersection of nonprofit ventures and commercial success led me (Tyler) to volunteer in Houston, Texas, where I worked alongside IDD individuals. This experience was enlightening, not just for the difference it made in their lives, but for the immense joy and fulfillment it brought to mine. Cana Ranch was born from this deep-seated desire to blend daily joy with meaningful action.”- Kelly & Tyler Mullman, Founders

The Need

In 2013, AB 1041 was enacted as a California state law, establishing the Employment First Policy. This crucial policy sought to promote a normative pattern of everyday living for people with developmental disabilities, closely resembling that of people without disabilities of the same age. It aimed to support the integration of these individuals into mainstream community life, advancing more independent, productive, and normal lives. The California State Council on Developmental Disabilities (SCDD) advocates for these individuals and their families, ensuring their full participation in planning, designing, and receiving essential services and supports that foster independence, productivity, inclusion, and self-determination. The SCDD does this through its 12 regional offices, providing a variety of services, including advocacy assistance, training, monitoring, and public information, thereby ensuring all laws, regulations, and policies that protect the rights of these individuals are strictly adhered to. The SCDD reports that only 11 thousand of the 90.8 thousand clients utilizing the state’s developmental disability centers have individual or group supported employment, and that these IDD employees earn on average 58% of the wages that non-IDD employees earn. This stark reality underpins the urgent need for Cana Ranch's social mission: providing meaningful employment opportunities, facilitating their integration into mainstream community life, and fostering independent, productive, and fulfilling lives for this valuable population. The establishment of Cana Ranch doesn't merely fulfill a business purpose; it responds to a compelling social call to action, transforming the lives of countless individuals and making an indelible impact on society.
